Galp Is about to Start Building 144 MW of Solar Power Plants in Portugal

March 30 (Renewables Now)—Portuguese energy group Galp Energia SGPS SA (ELI: GALP) announced that it has selected building contractors for its 144-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in the native country and will soon begin construction.

The contract went to a consortium formed by energy solutions provider Jayme da Costa and diversified holding company Visabeira, which will build four solar farms as parts of a single project in the municipality of Alcoutim.

Construction should start in April, while first power can be expected in the first quarter of 2022, Galp said. Once up and running, the four plants are expected to generate around 250,000 MWh per year.

Galp says it currently has 900 MW of solar PV capacity in operation. The oil-and-gas group has committed to allocating up to 40% of its annual investment in projects enabling the transition to a low-carbon energy model, and around 10%-15% in renewables and new businesses, it added.
