Floating Solar Energy Regarded as the Third Largest Photovoltaic Pillar
Floating solar energy is regarded as the third largest photovoltaic pillar in the world besides ground-mounted and rooftop photovoltaic.
At present, there are about 350 operational FPV systems in the world, distributed in 35 countries, with a cumulative capacity of about 2.6GW. Although the
floating system is still belong to a relatively small field, it can maintain an annual growth rate of 20% in the next five years.
Among them, China, India and other Asian countries account for two-thirds of the FPV market in the world. Among Asian countries, the new Wanjin tidal flat located on the southwest coast of South Korea has been identified as the site of the world's largest FPV device before 2025, with a capacity of 2.1 GW and an investment of about 4 billion US dollars.
India in South Asia, India's domestic
solar photovoltaic market is considered as one of the most competitive markets in the world. From 2016 to 2018, the bidding price of FPV has dropped by 45%. At present, about 1.7 GW is in different stages of development. In Thailand, the Thai Power Generation Authority (EGAT) is in favor of the national FPV goal, and announced in March 2019 that its goal is to build a total of 16 FPV systems on the dam by 2037, with a total capacity of 2.7 GW.
Nowadays, FPV 2.0, that is, FPV system co-located with existing hydropower stations, is being popularized, especially if it is combined with large hydropower stations that can operate flexibly. This FPV system will utilize the existing power transmission infrastructure of hydropower station, thus reducing the overall capital expenditure of FPV system.
