Fast-growing Solar Energy Market in Indonesia
In the past two decades, Indonesia's economy has achieved remarkable growth, and its energy demand has also increased exponentially.
With the economic growth in Indonesia in recent 20 years, the power demand of individuals, industry and commerce has gradually increased. However, the power structure of the country is still dominated by thermal power plants, and the development of
renewable energy is relatively slow.
According to a study by IESR, the installed capacity of
solar energy in Indonesia is only 181.2MW. At the same time, the report said that solar energy is the second fastest growing
renewable energy in China after hydropower, but it lags far behind the goals set by the National Energy Master Plan (RUEN).
According to reports, in order to realize the country's energy plan, the Indonesian government hopes to build two exhausted mining areas—Belitung Island in Bangka, southeast coast of Sumatra, where facilities are considered to equip with a total installed capacity of 1.25 GW, and Sikutai Regency District in Kalimantan Province in eastern Indonesia, in which a 1GW project may be developed. Marlistya Citraningrum, project manager of IESR's sustainable energy, told Photovoltaic Magazine: "There is no specific action yet, but the plan has been mentioned many times by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM)."
