Southern Europe, such as Spain and Italy, not only contains a lot of light and heat resources, but also can supply renewable electricity to Central and Northern European countries as needed.
Since the epidemic, the unemployment rate in Europe has risen. Strengthening energy security and promoting the integration of renewable energy will provide opportunities for the southern EU member States that suffered the most losses in the recent economic recession. These countries have solar energy resources and technical, industrial and engineering backgrounds, which can benefit from the construction and development of photovoltaic power generation and storage facilities.
As Lechon pointed out, who is the Spanish Center for Energy, Environment and Technology Research (CIEMAT) and MUSTEC project coordinato, "The coronavirus crisis has changed the geopolitical pattern within the EU, and energy is no exception."
The increasing integration of exchange and cooperation mechanisms between solar thermal and renewable energy will bring great geopolitical and economic benefits to Europe, which is especially valuable in the current crisis.
Therefore, the Spanish government has incorporated photothermal technology into its NECP. By 2030, there will be 5GW of solar thermal power generation, and the corresponding support mechanism will be provided according to the system value of this technology.
